The play “Once, I built a world” was based on the novel “Siddhartha” by Herman Hesse.

Through the perspective of a distant relationship between a father and a son, the author Jane Spasikj tries to shed new light on various developmental stages of life that he finds to be crucial, and the consequential aspect of the issue of personal choice.

Can a person escape the choices of their ancestors, and how much of our choices and decisions in life are our own?  Are there any universal values left, or they all became individual? Can you perceive a lifetime as one journey with a purpose, or does each stage have its own life and meaning? Do any of these questions have a definitive answer? Should they remain open?

Herman Hesse is often mistreated as an author, for trying to simplify the developmental stages of a person’s life. In his novels he divides these aspects in three phases, spiritual, urge-driven and intellectual. I find this simple division to be suitable for any person trying to establish their identity, especially during the years of adolescent quest of self. I am pleased for the opportunity to work on this particular piece here in the Children and Youth Theatre- Skopje, because especially because of the nature of the performance targeting youth and young adults. Because of the dynamic nature of the narrative and stage expression intertwining I hope it will open new perspectives for the modern viewer. – Jane Spasikj, author and director of the play.JANE SPASIḰ, Author and play director
